Barbara Helfgott Hyett is a Visiting Scholar with the Teachers
As Scholars Program at Harvard University's graduate School
of Education, teaching poetry writing and reading since 1999.
She is also a Visiting Poet with The Institute for Writing
at Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. since 1998.
Her
teaching both at Holy Cross and at Harvard has been tremendously
successful.... The evaluations of Barbara's Teachers-as-Scholars
seminars are effusive declairations of pleasure and appreciation;
they are the most glowing evaluations I have ever read.
- William J. Holinger, Acting Director, Harvard Graduate School
of Education
[She
is] quickly becoming an icon of the program...goddess, magic,
miracle worker, life giving. Wow....The teachers absolutely
adored [her] seminar.
- Henry Bolter, Teachers as Scholars Program, Harvard
...her never ending optimism kept our class enthused and enthralled
every time we met.
- student at Boston University in the 1991-92 Course Evaluation
Guide
Ms.
Hyett is a remarkable teacher. her students, in their evaluations
of her course, consistently comment on how encouraging she
is, how she creates the feeling that they are doing better
- these remarks about a teacher whose grading is strict. i
wish I knew her trick.
- William G. Riggs, Associate Chair, English, Boston University
It
is common knowledge here that Barbara is one of the best teachers
in the department. her passion for ideas, her delight in communicating
them, and the respect that she has for people no mater their
age or rank - these are just a few of the qualities that make
her such a formidable teacher....It's rare to find a poet
of such gifts who also cares about teaching as much as barbara
does. She would be a great asset wherever she was; and irreplaceable
here.
- Askold Melnyczuk, former Editor, Agni, Boston University
