BARBARA RETIRES; POEMWORKS WORKSHOPS CONTINUE!

In March, 2019, after receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Barbara retired from all teaching activities. Barbara taught full-time for 53 years, having been a professor or poet-in-residence at almost every high school and college in the Boston area, and the news of her sudden retirement has shocked and saddened the Greater Boston poetry community. Within PoemWorks, our feelings have been a mix of profound gratitude, boundless grief, and a very personal concern: who is going to help me with my poems the way Barbara did?

A number of Barbara’s students are stepping forward to offer workshops; they appear below and will be updated frequently. Barbara is aware of these groups and is extremely proud of everyone for taking the initiative to honor her life’s work.

In addition, the community has been fundraising for a Fellowship in Barbara’s name at the Writers’ Room of Boston, the non-profit she co-founded more than 30 years ago.
